Further details: The sessions are designed for those who, having previously studied Latin-perhaps to or beyond GCSE/O level-wish to brush up their Latin. It should be fun! It is not a linear taught course but rather we dip into different pieces of Latin both for the pleasure of the content and to remind ourselves of what we once knew! Currently we are reading the extracts in the 'Cambridge Latin Anthology (C.U.P) which, with plenty of help on vocabulary and translation, offers selections from Roman poets (e.g. Virgil, Ovid, Catullus) and prose writers (such as Caesar, Pliny, Tacitus). In the recent past these have included, for instance, Caesar and Tacitus on the Druids in Britain, mythology, murder and mayhem, the women of high society and love poetry (sexy and not!). And for fun we examine mottoes and sayings, derivations and origins of words, and the influence of Latin on English and other modern languages we may know. We just follow our enthusiasms. No homework is expected.
